I’m having the same problem but mine won’t even switch to 1080p. I try to change it to 1080p in the settings and it says “Not supported mode” and switched to 720p. I have a Samsung 1080p TV. Noone at Sony nor Samsung knows what the hell is going on.

Same problem here. TV is a Toxhiba 1080p and I can only get 720p. Sony’s got to be the problem. Too bad for us.

Those Damn bastards! I’m trying to find others with this problem. Maybe someone knows whats wrong. I bought the damn PS3 for the 1080p or I would have just kept using the XBOX360 until Socom came out

- [ Paul ] December 8, 2006 6:31 pm
Try running it on a sony tv, seems to work fine.

yes this is part of the ps3 screw ups — mismatches…
the hope is eventually they’ll hear enough and post it as another firmware update, sad not yet.

I have a sharp aquos 46″ 1080p and a maxent 26″ the second one i have to use and hdmi to dvi and i have the firmware 1.30 and i’ve got my ps3 two days ago and there’s no problem at all i think you guys should update to the last firmware for what i read it corrects all those problems
- [ Chris Kociolek ] December 12, 2006 7:24 am
How do I update the firmware. The latest update is 1.11 on my PS3. When I try to download a new update it says that none are available that I already have the latest update. It’s not 1.30 though???
- [ thekidgrif ] December 13, 2006 2:55 am
The HDMI cable you bought might be the problem, there are 2 versions for cables on HDTV’s. 1.0 and 1.3 not all cables work the same, 1.0 won’t work with 1.3 types of inputs. find a cable with 1.3 and backward compatiblity. that might do the trick.

im gettin the ps3 on christmas but i have a non HD flat screen 24″ insignia. will i be able to use the ps3 on it?
- [ Jig ] December 16, 2006 1:09 am
I have the latest firmware (just updated) and I too have the same problem. I can get all resolutions to work except the damn 1080P. This pisses me off….
- [ Chris Kociolek ] December 16, 2006 6:37 am
I went out and bought a new Audioquest HDMI for $200 and still the 1080p resolution is not working. I can’t believe Sony can get away with this shit. We should get together and impliment a class action lawsuit for false advertising. We cant be the only ones with this damn problem
- [ Will ] December 16, 2006 8:54 pm
The 1080P output of the PS3 is dependant
on the game being used. If it is not 1080P developed, the OS will revert to 720P. This issue will be patched in the next firmware update when the AUSTRALASIAN shipment hits shores/And there is no difference between a $20HDMI cable and $200HDMI cable. If you think otherwise you are stipid.
Well…unless you have a reference setup, but if you are just using it for a PS3 then of course you do not

- [ Chris Kociolek ] December 16, 2006 10:35 pm
I have a top of the line home entertainment system audiophile setup and there is defintely a major difference in the HDMI Cable Quality as well as other high-end cables. Also its not just the games that aren’t outputing in 1080p its my blu-ray movies as well and they are all in 1080p.

I have a 1080P Samsung and when I go to switch my PS3 to 1080P mode it says “Not Supported Mode” I called Samsung and they said that the tv should automatically switch to maximum resolution but I don’t know if its the ps3 or the tv?
- [ Jackson ] December 18, 2006 11:20 pm
I get the same “Not Supported” message on my Samsung 5668w television. I’ve called into both Samsung and Sony, but still haven’t gotten an answer to fix my problem.
Sony says that my TV might be “true 1080p,” and that really pisses me off because that’s the whole reason why I got the particular model television.
A Samsung technician (3rd party) told me that it’s a problem with Sony’s software or something.
I’ve written emails to both companies hoping to get some type of response in writing, but haven’t heard anything back as of yet.
This problem is really annoying…
- [ Chris Kociolek ] December 19, 2006 2:38 am
I hear ya. I have the same problem and tried exactly what you guys did. Sony says the Samsung TV is not true 1080p but Samsung said that was untrue that it must be the PS3 that is the problem.
They should both be shot! Conspiracy to buy matching components from the same company? I think so.
- [ dave ] December 19, 2006 9:04 am
I did a little research on hd tv’s and alot of the proplem is that most of the tv’s that say they support the 1080p resolution won’t actually switch straight to 1080p they manually up convert from 720p or 1080i and suppossibly give you 1080p don’t know if its true 1080 but I’ve yet to see..
- [ Jesse D ] December 20, 2006 8:17 pm
Right. Lots of TV’s have the capablility of 1080p, but because the technology is fairly new, and the ps3 is one of the first components to support it, you have to expect some bugs. I can guarantee that as long as you actually have a tv that supports 1080p (and not just 1080i!!!) you will be up and running in due time. Let them come up with another system update so you can enjoy your hd ps3 experience to the full.
Good Luck

I too am having an issue with my 1080p Samsung HL-S5687W. For those worried about the $3000 dollar TV they just purchased… it is fine. I used the same HDMI cable via a Samsung BluRay player and 1080p works. It has to be on Sonys end so please email them with your make and model of the TV in question to… http://www.us.playstation.com/Corporate/ContactUs/ConsumerServices
- [ Cliff ] December 22, 2006 1:58 am
I have a Samsung 61″ HL-S6187w TV, Generic HDMI cables, I enabled all video resolutions in the settings menu under display settings, and the system automatically picks the optimal setting for whatever i’m playing or watching. DVD, PS3 game, BluRay.
- [ Cliff ] December 22, 2006 1:59 am
And it has presented not one problem, since day 1.
- [ Chris Kociolek ] December 22, 2006 3:59 am
Hey Cliff, How do you know which resolution is outputting if you selected all the display resolutions? Try selecting 1080p only. Then you might have some useful info for us. I know the damn thing works with 720p 1080i but I could give an f’in shit about them. How do you know what your watching is 1080p unless it allows to select only that resolution? I’m so pissed at this and many of your respnses are like talking to a two year old. Don’t mean to be a jerk but WE need answers!
- [ Ryan ] December 23, 2006 11:17 am

I was able to get 1080p on a Mitsubishi Wd 62827. Then updated the firmware and can now only get 1080i, wtf , it was supposed to be a firmware update. Anyone else have this happen??
- [ Nick ] December 25, 2006 4:14 am
I have a 1080p Mitsubishi WS-73827 and it will only go up to 1080i. I made sure to 1080p compatible HDMI cable. It’s really frustrating to spend that much money on this stuff and it not work!
- [ Bob ] December 25, 2006 9:06 am
I’ve been subjected to the NO-1080p curse as well… I’ve got a Westy 37w1 that’s 1080p native and I get something that looks like static across the screen & it’s pissing me off. I’m hopeful Sony will fix this soon. I’m a recreation gamer, but I really wanted it for it’s BD.
- [ NP ] December 26, 2006 6:52 am
I have a 56″ samsung hlr5668 1080p tv and received the “not supported” message also when selecting 1080p for maximum resolution. I upgraded the firmware, that didn’t help. I connected it to my Sony 40″ xbr3 tv with the same hdmi cable and it worked fine. I’m waiting back from both companies as well.
- [ Bob ] December 26, 2006 9:30 pm
I have SM 6187W also and when I watch movie it definately not at 1080 it is same quality as regular dvd, I have both version of black hawk down and compared the same frame, they look the same! in the mean time the king kong (HDDVD) looks immaculate. BR/DVD display set to automatic and HDMI all output checked. it won’t let me uncheck 480P so I have no way to tell if they on 480P or others….
