1UP: So how did the concept of Gundam Musou -- having Omega Force developing a Gundam game -- come about? Who started the discussions? Yoshiyasu Horiuchi: The idea first came about when Koei contacted us about collaborating on software for next-gen systems. It took some time before actual development started, but in the end, we decided to work with Omega Force on a Gundam-based game, to which we gave the code name "Gundam Musou". We considered several different names for the game, but in the end, "Gundam Musou" wound up being used as the official title [Ed's note: Dynasty Warriors is known as Shin Sangokumusou in Japan]. Part of the reason we decided to start this project was because there are many Gundam fans at Koei, and they wanted to put their skills and know-how into making a game set in the Gundam universe. That motivation was a significant help during the project. Having such skilled and motivated people involved is an extremely important aspect of game development. http://media.1up.com/media?id=3210251 Yoshiyasu Horiuchi, Chief Producer of Gundam Musou 1UP: Gundam Musou has consistently been on the Most Wanted lists in Japan since it was announced. Some people have even gone so far as to say it's the most important game for PS3 this year. How does that make you feel? Did that add a lot of pressure? YH: There's always a lot of pressure involved in developing a Gundam game. We really felt it this time because of the game's budget and the fact that we were developing it on next-generation hardware. Plus, we were borrowing the Musou brand and using Omega Force staff to develop our concept, which added to the pressure. We're very pleased that this has led to Gundam Musou being called one of the most important PS3 titles, and we hope it'll help to expand the PS3 userbase in Japan. 1UP: Well it's certainly expected that Gundam Musou will push PS3 sales in Japan. Have Ken Kutaragi and Sony been appreciative and supportive of the game? YH: At a recent event in Tokyo, Mr. Kutaragi commented that he would be supporting us with this title. We were very pleased to hear that. 1UP: How do you think the game will do in the U.S., though? Gundam games traditionally haven't been as popular in the U.S. as in Japan. Do you think because this one is more action-based that it might appeal more to North American gamers? YH: I think the fact that this one is a collaboration with the Dynasty Warriors franchise will help it gain attention in the U.S. Compared to previous Gundam games, Gundam Musou focuses less on recreating the experience of piloting huge 18-meter robots and more on providing the fast-paced, strategic playability of an action game. It also offers a sense of speed and thrill not found in games with ordinary people fighting, which we think will appeal to American players. We hope lots of people will try it out and enjoy it. 1UP: The game was in development for over two years and was only recently announced. How did you keep it under wraps for so long? YH: We didn't do anything special, actually. I was wondering when it was going to leak, but it looks like we got away clean this time. http://media.1up.com/media?id=3210247 1UP: As you were working on it, how did the world of Gundam translate into the Musou style of gameplay? Was it a natural fit? YH: From the start, both the action elements and the Musou-style strategy elements seemed to fit well into the Gundam universe. The concept of different characters and MS's (mobile suits) appearing in various locations throughout the maps and causing drama was a perfect fit for Gundam. We chose individualized weapons and attacks for each MS, keeping in mind how the varied actions would affect the game's action elements as a whole. This should provide a lot of fun variations in battle style, and this, too, fits in with the many different weapons present in the Gundam universe. The scenario and the various stages were developed with this in mind, so that both newcomers and those familiar with the Gundam animated series can enjoy it. The popular Wing Gundam Zero makes an appearance as well, and I think players will be surprised by its incredible firepower. 1UP: So now that you have the Musou engine running on PS3, do you have plans for future Musou games on the PS3 (Gundam or otherwise)? YH: That's not currently decided. If this game does well, it's more likely for that to become a reality, so we hope U.S. players will support the game. http://media.1up.com/media?id=3210248 1UP: On that note, then, is there anything you would like to tell North American gamers who are waiting for the game? YH: In order to bring the best possible game and atmosphere to the North American market, we traveled to the US several times to hear the opinions of American players. We heard lots of different views on the Gundam franchise, and in the end, I think that Gundam Musou has turned out to be the kind of game American players will look forward to. Even in Japan, Gundam Musou was developed with more than just Gundam fans in mind--we wanted to provide Musou fans with a new experience that could be fully enjoyed without requiring an in-depth knowledge of the Gundam universe. The swift swordplay, variety of weapons, and fast-paced dynamic action should make for an enjoyable experience. Incidentally, the main reason Wing Gundam Zero is in the game is because someone pointed out at one of our design meetings that American players would appreciate it. |
