Killzone 2 Composer Discusses the State of Game Music
March 13th, 2009
Joris de Man, music composer for the critically well received Killzone 2 (read our review here), is currently working on his next game: an XBLA racer called Scrap Metal from N+ XBLA developer Slick Entertainment. But during a recent phone interview, we had a chance to check in with him on his thoughts on game music in general, and the differences between working on games and working on films.
1UP: What do you feel is the current state of videogame music composition?
Joris de Man: What I find interesting is that there’s a change going on. You see composers now thinking, “How can we tackle this familiar sequence in a new way.” For example, Dead Space and BioShock, those games are examples of a composer thinking, “I want to do something different.” They’re moving towards techniques that, in film and the classical world, have been used for the last 20 years or so, but are relatively new to games.
